"I thought I was gone": Grandfather reunited with rescuers after pier fall

John Mirabelli, 88, has been reunited with the three men who saved his life after he accidentally fell into the ocean.

The great-grandfather was fishing off Portsea Pier in Victoria last month, when he lost his footing and fell off the pier and into the bay.

"I thought I was gone, because when I fell in, I went straight down," Mirabelli told 9News.

Dressed in just a raincoat and a pair of gumboots, the 88-year-old was drenched and holding on to a slippery pylon for almost an hour, and just when he thought all hope was lost, local surfer Ben Buxton luckily walked by.

"I looked over and I saw John holding onto a little wire and the look on his face, it was kinda terrifying, because he appeared to only have a few moments left until he had to let go of the wire," he said.

"I just thought if I can get a board to where John is then he's possibly got a chance."

As he paddled over to Mirabelli, police officers Oliver Waters and Adam Gardner arrived, after a call to triple zero.

Between them Buxton and Waters took turns reassuring the great-grandfather and convinced him to hold on to the board, as they floated him around the pier for almost 20 minutes to get him back on dry land.

"In that time, we were talking to John to try and get him relaxed," Buxton said.

"And he kept talking about the calamari that he'd had to let go when he'd fallen into the pier."

After a stint in hospital, Mirabelli was reunited with his rescuers.

"It's special for us, we really appreciate the chance to catch up with John again," Waters said.

"He's a lovely man."

Mirabelli embraced the three men and expressed his gratitude: "If it was not for you, I would not be alive."

The 88-year-old has fished at the same spot for decades and said that he won't be scared away anytime soon.

He even joked about how he will search for the calamari that got away.

"Next time I'll fix him up - if it's the same one," he said.

Images: Nine

Shocking twist on teen accused of pushing elderly man off pier

Just hours after a 14-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly shoving an elderly man off the Mornington Peninsula pier, the teenager has been accused of previously assaulting a woman.

Jamie Tilbrook, 35, was allegedly bashed by the same group of teens who pushed the 79-year-old off the pier.

Shocking CCTV footage of the alleged attack showed two boys throwing a series of punches towards Ms Tilbrook's head in broad daylight, after she confronted them for vandalising a bus and tipping bins over.

"I said, 'What the f--- are you doing?' They turn around and jump me," she said.

"Two boys just come and started smashing me in the head. I was telling my girlfriend to get away, like, I didn't want her to get attacked."

The 35-year-old had to be rushed to hospital after losing consciousness and spent a night at The Alfred, where doctors had to glue her wound shut.

Ms Tilbrook told 9News that she no longer goes out and night and has to constantly watch her back after the alleged assault.

The incident came just two months before the alleged attack of the elderly man, and the 14-year-old boy was on bail when he pushed the man off the pier.

Ms Tilbrook revealed she was "disgusted" that the same boy who was charged after allegedly assaulting her, was now accused of pushing a fisherman off the pier.

His friends had filmed the horrific incident before posting it online.

9News revealed that the teenager has since been charged over the assault and allegedly breaching his bail conditions.

He will reportedly face children's court at a later date.

Images: 9News

Teenager arrested after shoving elderly man off pier

A teenager has been arrested after a disgraceful assault on an elderly man, which saw the teen push the man off a pier and into the water.

The 79-year-old was walking along the pier at Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula on Sunday night, when he was targeted by a group of three teenagers.

Filming the assault, the teenagers laughed as one boy approached the elderly man and shoved him off the pier and into the water below.

The teens ran away laughing, and later uploaded the footage of the incident to social media.

Mornington Peninsula MP, Chris Crewther slammed the actions of the group and told the Today show that the man was not a strong swimmer and could have drowned if it wasn't for two bystanders who jumped into the water to save him.

"It is disgraceful, appalling and cowardly behaviour," he said.

"I know that this man is highly shaken and traumatised by the event and fortunately, I understand he wasn't seriously injured, but it would take a while to recover from this mentally and emotionally."

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and unlawful assault over the incident.

Crewther confirmed the other two boys involved in the attack are known to police, given that the footage of the shoving was uploaded to their personal social media accounts.

"Obviously they were wanting some notoriety and to show their exploits on social media, which has actually got them in trouble now because they've identified themselves," he said.

"The Police know who they are and are asking the victim to come forward to give a statement so that these three can be charged to the fullest extent and hopefully they will be punished."

Piers Morgan lays into vegan activist Tash Peterson

Prominent Australian vegan activist Tash Peterson found herself in the middle of a fiery debate with British media personality Piers Morgan during her appearance on his TV program, Uncensored.

The 29-year-old activist donned a T-shirt with the slogan "end this holocaust" and an image of a caged pig, which immediately sparked heated discussions.

Morgan began the conversation by suggesting that people might be turning away from veganism because they felt overwhelmed by aggressive approaches. He referred to Peterson's habit of entering restaurants and playing sounds of animals being slaughtered, aiming to draw attention to the treatment of animals in the meat industry.

Peterson defended her actions, stating that it raises awareness about what she calls the "animal holocaust." However, Morgan took issue with her choice of words, asserting that the term "holocaust" should be reserved for the mass extermination of six million Jewish people during World War II. He questioned the use of such emotive language, fearing it would offend people.

“You’re (Peterson) one of those people that runs into restaurants and plays sounds from screaming animals in abattoirs and so on,” said Morgan.

“No, I don’t think so at all," replied Peterson. "I think it brings more attention to the animal holocaust.”

“Why would you use the word 'holocaust'?" interjected Morgan. “Holocaust is the mass extermination of more than six million Jewish people by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. Why would you use that very emotive language knowing it would offend people?”

Peterson stood her ground, arguing that the term "holocaust" is applicable when looking at the broader definition of the word, as it refers to mass slaughter or destruction. She believed that multiple holocausts have occurred throughout history, extending the idea to include the suffering of non-human animals.

“If you look at the definition of a holocaust it is slaughter or destruction on a mass scale," she said. "Multiple holocausts have occurred throughout human history and non-human animals can be subjected to the same atrocities that humans can.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tash Peterson (@vganbooty)

Tomi Lahren, another guest on the show and a conservative political commentator from a ranching family, joined Morgan in opposing the comparison made by Peterson. Lahren emphasised the care given to animals within the farming and ranching communities.

The conversation also touched on British TV personality Bear Grylls, who had recently given up veganism. Peterson accused Grylls of being a "fake vegan," which Morgan questioned, pointing out that Grylls had authored a vegan cookbook. Peterson, however, maintained that true vegans would never abandon their ethical stance against animal abuse and murder.

Morgan concluded the discussion by criticising Peterson's protest methods, urging her to explore more effective ways to promote veganism rather than resorting to disruptive actions like entering restaurants and playing distressing animal sounds.

Peterson is currently in the UK for the Vegan Camp Out Festival, where she is scheduled to be a guest speaker. However, she had to seek clearance from a Perth court due to charges related to an incident in which she allegedly refused to leave a restaurant during a confrontation with anti-vegan chef John Mountain.

Images: Instagram

Piers Morgan lashes out at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

Piers Morgan has once again lashed out at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry but this time over their Netflix doco series trailer.

The trailer for the $157 million show dropped just hours after Prince William and Kate Middleton arrived in the US.

The official Netflix account shared the trailer for the show with the caption reading: “Harry & Meghan. A Netflix Global Event. Coming soon, only on Netflix.”

This has however infuriated renowned journalist Piers Morgan for being “so ghastly, so repugnant, so dripping in sanctimony and fake hammy ‘woe-is-us’ acting, that I felt my intestines physically recoil in abject disgust.”

“Imagine bleating constantly about privacy, including repeatedly suing news organisations for intrusion, and then making a kiss-and-tell reality show about your private lives?

“Or preaching endlessly about compassion, yet once again trashing your family on global television?”

The six part series will tell Harry and Meghan’s story after they left the royal family.

Harry & Meghan. A Netflix Global Event. "He's basically a pig": Erin Molan and Piers Morgan slam Kyrgios

Erin Molan and Piers Morgan have called out the court-side antics of Nick Kyrgios, after he was slammed for his behaviour at Wimbledon.

After Kyrgios' first round win, he spoke of his frustration with a line judge and admitted to spitting in the direction of a disgruntled spectator, as well as eating sushi throughout an explosive post-match press conference.

Appalled by his actions, Piers Morgan condemned his behaviour in an interview with Erin Molan on Sky News’ Piers Morgan Uncensored.

Morgan vented, “He’s basically a pig he’s eating his food as he talks to the media, he abuses a female lineswoman, he abuses an elderly linesman, he abuses the crowd, he spits at one of them."

“The man is out of control. Can you put up any defence for this antipodean monster?”

Molan agreed with his comments, saying, “Piers, there's plenty of Australians who think he's in an absolute tool as well.

“I’ve been one of his most vocal critics for a very long time.”

“But I'll tell you what, the spitting even towards someone in their direction is appalling,” she continued.

“The abuse of anyone in their workplace is appalling, the hypocrisy that he displays is completely appalling."

“He replied to someone on social media overnight that had taken him to task over this and said, ‘Oh, but I would never go into your workplace and abuse you.’"

“Does he think the linesmen are volunteers? That's their workplace he's abusing them.”

Following the incident at Wimbledon, Nick Kyrgios defended his actions as he believed he did nothing wrong.

He went on to say it was unfair that the audience was allowed to shout things at the tennis star and he couldn't respond.

“That’s fine. But if I give it back to you, then that’s just how it is," he said.

“There’s a fence there and I physically can’t do anything or say anything because I’ll get in trouble. They’re able to say anything they want.”

Piers Morgan slams Ukraine’s “sympathy” Eurovision win

Piers Morgan has slammed the winners of the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, claiming the act from Ukraine won on a “sympathy vote”.

The rap group Kalush Orchestra were crowned winners of the annual contest for their song Stefania, with Morgan claiming that their musical talent was not considered in the voting process, but rather that their country is under attack.

In a Twitter post, the 57-year-old broadcaster wrote, “Nobody who voted for Ukraine thought it was the best song because it obviously wasn’t anywhere near the best. Even Ukrainians don’t think it was the best song.”

“They got the sympathy vote, which is fine as long as we drop the word ‘contest’ from Eurovision.”

Morgan also suggested that the contest is a “rigged farce” and suggested Ukraine would have won due to the highly publicised invasion by Russia, regardless of their act.

He added in a separate tweet, “The world’s most absurd, pointless, politically-motivated ‘contest’ excels itself. Ukraine could have sent one of its heroic bomb-sniffing dogs to bark the national anthem and still won. Happy for them, but please let’s stop calling #Eurovision a contest... it’s a rigged farce.”

Kalush Orchestra frontman Oleh Psiuk thinks that their winning song, which pays tribute to his mother, has been redefined as a rallying cry for Ukraine amid the devastating conflict with Russia.

He said, “After it all started with the war and the hostilities, it took on additional meaning, and many people started seeing it as their mother, Ukraine, in the meaning of the country.”

“It has become really close to the hearts of so many people in Ukraine.”

“Turn the cameras off!”: Trump storms out on Piers Morgan

Former US President Donald Trump has erupted at Piers Morgan before storming off the set of an interview that touched on the “stolen” US presidential election.

After Morgan lay the blame for last year’s deadly riots at the Capitol squarely at Trump’s feet – largely for his refusal to concede that he had lost the 2020 presidential election – Trump had had enough, and began screaming that Morgan was “dishonest” and “a fool”, before demanding that the shocked TV crew “turn the cameras off!”

Trump appears to have been deeply angered by a slew of barbs that Morgan has directed towards him during his time at the White House, despite being friends for at least 15 years. But in this instance, the pair appeared to clash heavily even before the interview had gotten underway – but while the cameras were rolling.

Morgan detailed the behind-the-scenes incident to news.com.au, saying that Trump stared at him with “undisguised fury” and was “almost foaming at the mouth”.

At one point, the Trump hissed at Morgan: “What the f**k is this?”

You’re not real. You’re a fake.” To which Piers replied: “No, I’m just brutally honest.”

Morgan revealed further details from the encounter:

“Normally, he’d greet me with a cheery smile and the words ‘How’s my champ?’ because I was his first Celebrity Apprentice on the series that made him a TV superstar. But this time, there were no such welcoming niceties.

“He was staring at me across his desk with undisguised fury, clutching the document entitled ‘Piers Morgan Comments About President Trump’. “What the f**k IS this?” he snarled. Then he began slowly reading out some of the quotes. “Trump’s a supreme narcissist….” Pause. “His pathetic antics in the past few weeks since losing the election in November have been utterly contemptible.” Pause. “Trump’s now too dangerous, he’s morphed into a monster that I no longer recognise as someone I considered to be a friend and thought I knew.”

“Each time he paused, he peered over the document at me, with mounting rage in his eyes.

“I’d never seen him so livid or felt so uncomfortable in his presence as I did right now in his office.

“He was almost foaming at the mouth and kept shaking his head slowly and menacingly at me, like Don Corleone when he felt he’d been disrespected.”

Morgan then went on to detail the moment Trump truly took issue with his questions:

“Things took a dramatic downward turn when I finally brought up his refusal to accept defeat in 2020 and the appalling scenes on January 6.

“I told him I believe he lost the supposedly “rigged, stolen” election, I repeatedly pointed out his failure to produce any evidence of the widespread voter fraud he insists occurred to rob him of his presidency, and I blamed his refusal to admit defeat for the deadly riots at the Capitol.

“Then you’re a fool!” he sneered. “And you haven’t studied!...”

“Now abandoning any pretence at cordiality, Trump ranted that he was far more honest than me, and again sneered that I wasn’t ‘real’ before haranguing me for exceeding our 20 minutes which was particularly disingenuous given that during all our previous interviews, he’d invariably decided exactly how long he wanted to keep talking.

“Incensed Trump tried to end things by declaring “That’s it!” before I reminded him that we hadn’t discussed his hole-in-one, which he then sat down again and did – briefly – before abruptly jumping to his feet, looking hateful, and barking at the shocked crew: “Turn the cameras off!”

“Then he turned on his heels, and sloped angrily off through a side door, loudly muttering “So dishonest…”

The world exclusive interview is due to air as the launch piece for Morgan’s new show Piers Uncensored on Sky News on Tuesday night at 9pm AEST.

Image: Piers Uncensored

Disgraced ex-TV host Piers Morgan has come out swinging once again at Meghan Markle, in the wake of her victory in court against the Mail on Sunday.

Piers, who currently writes for the Daily Mail, took to Twitter to call Meghan "Princess Pinocchio", and blast her of being "two-faced".

Meghan sued the Mail on Sunday over the publication of a "personal and private" letter she sent her father Thomas Markle in 2018.

Publishers Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) launched an appeal against a decision to grant a summary judgment - meaning The Duchess didn't need to face a high-profile trial.

The judges at the Court of Appeal ruled in Markle's favour, and dismissed new claims of that threatened her credibility.

Within hours of the ruling, Piers lashed out at the Meghan once again, while also promoting his Daily Mail opinion column.

Piers tweeted, "A responsive statement from Piers, The Earl of Exposing Princess Pinocchio Bullsh*t, will be published shortly."

A responsive statement from Piers, The Earl of Exposing Princess Pinocchio Bullsh*t, will be published shortly. pic.twitter.com/biTPSirxvY
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) December 2, 2021

In a statement from Meghan Markle, she said that her win in court would transcend her personal experience, and would help anyone slated by the press.

She said, "This is a victory not just for me, but for anyone who has ever felt scared to stand up for what's right."

Morgan argued with Markle's statement saying that the case was "beyond parody".

In his Daily Mail column, he wrote, "She can claim 'victory' all she likes after this court case, but all it really did was expose her real character to the world and the cold hard two-faced reality at the heart of Meghan and Harry's attitude to privacy."

When sharing his column to his following on Twitter, he added, "Put your gloating champagne away, Princess Pinocchio - the court of public opinion now knows you're a fork-tongued devious manipulative piece of work who only wants to protect your privacy so you can sell it."

Piers Morgan’s Meghan Markle comments cleared

Piers Morgan has been cleared by British media regulator Ofcom, after it received a record 58,000 complaints about Morgan’s criticisms of Meghan Markle.

The former Good Morning Britain host said he didn’t believe what Meghan said during her and her husband’s controversial Oprah Winfrey interview, prompting the duchess to file complaints with the regulator and ITV.

Ofcom said restricting Morgan’s views would be a “chilling restriction” on free expression, though it criticised his “apparent disregard” for the topic of suicide.

In particular, Morgan expressed disbelief at Meghan’s claims of experiencing suicidal thoughts and struggling with her mental health while performing her royal duties.

Royal author Angela Levin claimed the duchess would be “absolutely livid” with the decision and may pursue further legal action.

“She can’t cope with someone saying she didn’t tell the truth. Because she is all about compassion and understanding and caring for people,” Ms Levin told The Sun.

Speaking outside his home, Morgan said he “wasn’t really sure why I lost [my job] in the first place”.

He added that Ofcom had “emphatically endorsed my right to not believe what the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were saying”.

Taking to Twitter, the 56-year-old journalist wrote: “I’m delighted OFCOM has endorsed my right to disbelieve the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s incendiary claims to Oprah Winfrey, many of which have proven to be untrue.

I’m delighted OFCOM has endorsed my right to disbelieve the Duke & Duchess of Sussex’s incendiary claims to Oprah Winfrey, many of which have proven to be untrue. Piers Morgan's scathing attack on Naomi Osaka

Piers Morgan is standing by his criticism of Naomi Osaka despite a fierce backlash after he accused her of playing the victim and adopting a strategy straight from the "Meghan and Harry playbook".

The British media personality has been a ferocious critic of Meghan and Harry and in a column for the Daily Mail earlier this week, accused Osaka of exploiting the issue of mental health to avoid attending press conferences at the French Open.

Osaka has since pulled out of the Grand Slam completely after only one round due to mental health reasons, saying she has suffered "long bouts of depression" since 2018 and gets "anxiety" when speaking to the world's media.

While many people were critical of Osaka's initial claim saying the media has no regard for players' mental health, the world has largely shown support to the Japanese athlete following her decision to pull out of Roland Garros and take time away from tennis.

However, Morgan isn’t backing down, responding to a host of tweets criticising him — some of which accused the former TV star of having a problem with women of colour.

“What does her skin colour have to do with it? I’d have written the same column if Naomi Osaka was white. For you to now play the race card to attack & silence any perfectly justified criticism of her behaviour is shameful,” Morgan wrote in response to political commentator Ameshia Cross, who alleged he “hates black women”.

In another tweet, Morgan wrote: “Are high-profile women of colour exempt from criticism regardless of their conduct? Sorry, I must have missed that woke memo! The people I’ve criticised most harshly in the past year are Donald Trump & Boris Johnson and last time I checked, they were identifying as white men.”

“What journalist will dare criticise Naomi Osaka ever again? She’s got what she wanted — no more criticism, only praise,” Morgan added on social media. “Meanwhile all her fellow tennis professionals will continue to fulfil their contractual obligations to the media & get criticism when deserved. This seem fair?

“I have a problem with high-profile people who exploit the media for huge financial gain and then attack the same media and use mental health as a weapon to silence criticism.

“My critiques of people have nothing to do with gender or skin colour & everything to do with how annoying they are.”

Morgan also wrote on Twitter that Osaka had “withdrawn because of the backlash to her attack on the tennis media for doing their job”, rather than mental health problems.
